Jags basketball will play in SWAC tourney
BATON ROUGE - A ruling from the Southwestern Athletic Conference will allow the Southern University men's and women's basketball will be allowed to play in the SWAC tournament.
This comes after the decision earlier this week from the NCAA to ban the Jaguars from postseason play.
The SWAC conference says the NCAA allowed them to change their bylaws for the 2014 tournament regarding the automatic bid to the NCAA championship tournament.
The new rule is the team that advances the farthest in the SWAC tournament and is allowed to play in the NCAA tournament will receive the auto-bid. If all remaining eligible teams are eliminated in the same round, the bid will go to the highest seed that made it the furthest.
Other institutions that will now be allowed to participate in the SWAC tournament are Grambling State, Mississippi Valley State, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
This year's SWAC men's and women's basketball championships will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas from March 11-15.
