DENHAM SPRINGS - Jade Mitchell is just $300 shy of donating $10,000 by 2014, despite heartbreak at home.

Ten year old Jade Mitchell has been selling duct tape flowers through her business, Jade's Flowers, for a year and a half. She donates all of her profits to the Denham Springs Animal Shelter. She set a goal to donate $10,000 to help the animals by the end of the year, but she's had a few bumps in the road.

In August, her family home burned down. Her family lost everything in the fire, including her supplies to make her pens. Jade didn't give up. The community stepped in to help her, just like she helped the animals. Construction on her home is set to start in January.

"If you stop, you wont get anywhere so you kind of have to keep going," she said.

This month, Jade's aunt was diagnosed with state four pancreatic cancer.

"She would come to the festival, she would make the pedals for me, she did tons of stuff to help," Jade continued. "She just found out that she has pancreatic cancer, so we've been trying to help her as much as we can, but we're still trying to help the animals at the same time.. I want to do everything I can and more."

Jade is expanding her pens by making them purple, green and silver to honor her aunt. She still hopes to have the money to the shelter by the new year. To order from Jade's flowers call 225-937-4431 or visit her facebook page.
