DENHAM SPRINGS- A jab from the other side came Tuesday in a spar between two candidates running for city judge in Denham Springs.

On Monday, Jerry Denton said opponent Blayne Honeycutt tore up his campaign signs.  Denton said video shows Honeycutt's tirade in action.

While Honeycutt did not speak on the issue for the original report, he released a statement through his campaign Tuesday, admitting he removed his opponent's sign because it was wrongfully placed on private property.

"...I regret and apologize for my action, and any misconceptions that it may have created," Honeycutt said.  He continued, "It will not happen again, but in order to clarify the incident, I had permission from the landowner, Mr. Danny Ballard, to place my signs on his private property. He told me that Mr. Denton had not asked permission to place a sign on his property. I was instructed by Mr. Ballard to take down any Denton sign and place it on the ground, which I did."

In an email to the WBRZ Investigative Unit, Honeycutt also provided a sworn statement from Ballard who wrote: "To set the record straight, I told Blayne Honeycutt he could put a sign on my property and if he saw any other candidate's sign, he could remove them since no one had asked my permission. Blayne Honeycutt did what I instructed him to do. To me, this election is much more than a yard sign. It's about electing the person with the most courtroom experience."

"I thought Blayne was a friend of mine," Denton said Monday. "I know we were in this race, but I'm just disappointed. I wish he hadn't conducted himself that way...that's all."

Denton said he and Honeycutt have known each other for twenty-five years.

The Secretary of State's Office does not police political happenings between candidates. Any of that would have to be taken care of with local law enforcement.  Denham Springs Police Chief Shannon Womack confirmed to the WBRZ Investigative Unit, a police report was filed and his office is investigating.
