International Paper gives 2 reservoirs to LDWF
BASTROP - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says International Paper is giving it two reservoirs that are popular recreational sites near Bastrop. The Bussey Brake reservoir is on about 2,600 acres and the Wham Brake reservoir about 5,500.
IP Senior Vice President Tommy Joseph says the donation will preserve the reservoirs for future generations.
The company impounded both in the 1950s. It closed its Bastrop mill in 2009.
Secretary Robert Barham says the department plans to drain Bussey Brake, refill it and stock it with popular game fish. He says it will take three to five years and the new fish population should keep itself going for decades.
Wham Brake will become part of the Russell-Sage Wildlife Management Area. Planned improvements include more boat launches and parking areas.
