The Independence Town Council has appointed the older brother of the Tangipahoa Parish sheriff as
police chief in the wake of a federal prosecutor filing charges against the former elected chief.

In a unanimous vote Monday, the council voted to appoint 50-year-old Frank Edwards III as police chief to serve until a candidate is elected to fill the unexpired term of Anthony P. Maurer.

Edwards will head a police force with six full-time officers and five part-time officers.

The council also accepted the resignation of Maurer.

Federal prosecutors in New Orleans filed charges against Maurer in connection with people not registered to vote casting ballots in the Feb. 9, 2008, election.
