BATON ROUGE - The Baton Rouge Police Department has issued a statement from Interim Police Chief Jonny Dunnam after several people were killed in the area over the weekend.

Chief Dunnam says the department is working hard to address the barrage of violent crimes that killed at least five people between Friday and Sunday.

"The recent spate of violent crimes in Baton Rouge over the past weekend is concerning to our entire community," Dunnam said. "I want to reassure the community that investigators are working diligently to solve and apprehend the ones responsible for these crimes."

The violence began Friday when a man was fatally shot and a dog was wounded during a fight over a possible robbery. A man turned himself in in connection with the shooting Saturday and accused the victim of wanting to rob him.

On Saturday afternoon, a shooting on Alliquippa Street left a man in critical condition before he finally succumbed to his injuries Sunday morning. Police say there are no known suspects or motives for the shooting at this time. 

Finally, three people were killed Sunday in the area around S. Flannery Road. Police say a woman was found dead inside a home on Goodwood Boulevard with multiple cuts across her body. Later that same afternoon, two teens were killed after a shooting broke out while they were conducting a drug deal on S. Flannery.

Police have yet to make in arrest in the woman's death on Goodwood. It is also believed that a third suspect may have been involved in the Flannery shooting.

As police continue to investigate the weekend's deadly crimes, the interim chief says the department is preparing to welcome 20 new graduates from the Field Training Program on August 4. Dunnam says these new officers will immediately begin patrols in the areas where violent crimes have increased.
