Inmates from New Orleans headed to Iberville prison
ST. GABRIEL- Inmates with mental health needs will be moved from the Orleans Parish Prison to Hunt Correctional Center in a more than half-million dollar plan to reform OPP.
The Crescent City's jail is undergoing slow-moving reforms. Inmates have been held in moldy, flooded conditions. Sometimes, they have to sleep on the floor. The conditions are too nasty for offenders who are incarcerated for crimes, a judge ruled.
The move to Iberville Parish is temporary and will initially cost $400,000 and more than $200,000 per month. Costs will cover renovations and supplies plus added security, staff and food at Hunt.
