Gulfport police were investigating Thursday the death of a state inmate during a mowing accident.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove says the man was working for a city beautification crew and workers had to bring in a machine to lift the mower off the inmate.

The inmate's name has not been released.

Authorities say the inmate was on a mower when it overturned, pinning the inmate underneath in a ditch with water in it.

The incident occurred along the Clower-Thornton Nature Area.
