Inmate accused of stealing smokes, booze
JACKSON - Sheriff's deputies accused a work-release inmate being housed in East Feliciana Parish of stealing thousands of dollars of cigarettes and alcohol from a store in Jackson.
The East Feliciana Sheriff's Office said Raphael Jenkins, 51, stole $6,000 worth of smokes and booze from the gas station he was at for work release.
The sheriff's office said the thefts happened between Dec. 30 and Jan. 4. They said when the owner noticed the missing stock they reported it to Jackson Police, who arrested Jenkins on theft charges.
The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office also charged Jenkins with escape, because they said he violated his work release terms by leaving the store to stash his stolen goods.
The Department of Corrections said Jenkins was serving concurrent sentences of 7 and 10 years for simple burglary.
News 2's Jason Newton will have more on the arrest tonight at 6 p.m.
