Injuries from Axiall fire rises to 18
WESTLAKE, La. - Hospital officials in Lake Charles say the number of people treated from an explosion and fire at Axiall Corp. chemical plant has risen to 18.
All 18 people were treated and released from Christus St. Patrick Hospital for injuries related to hazardous smoke. The smoke drifted over Interstate 10 on Dec. 20 from an explosion at Axiall in Westlake.
Atlanta-based Axiall says it's still investigating the cause.
Callers to the Coast Guard's National Response Center reported the fire released unknown amounts of vinyl chloride, hydrochloric acid and EDC dichloroethane.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is expected to a release a report by Friday.
