Infants injured during storm in Tangipahoa Parish
KENTWOOD- Two infants were checked out for minor injuries caused by debris when a severe storm knocked a tree onto their home Tuesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service reported trees had fallen on homes and power lines were down in northern Tangipahoa Parish. Kentwood is about 35 miles north of Hammond along I-55.
WBRZ Chief Forecaster Pat Shingleton said the area had been under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:30.
"It could have been straight-line winds or strong, damaging winds that moved through the area and knocked those trees down," Shingleton said.
In an interview with WWL TV, the town's fire chief said the children had scratches and were covered in dust from debris that got knocked around when the tree smashed onto the house. He said the tree did not fall through the house.
Shortly after the storm, about 1,000 people were without power along Highway 51. As of 6:30, most had power restored.
