Increased cigarette tax goes into effect today
BATON ROUGE- Starting Wednesday, smokers in Louisiana will be shelling out a little more money for cigarettes. The state cigarette tax is going up 50 cents to 86 cents a pack.
Lawmakers approved the tax increase during this year's legislative session. The money generated from the new tax will be used to fund healthcare.
There will also be a tax increase on vapor products and e-cigarettes which have seen a rise in popularity over the past few years.
The tax raise was one of the hot topics discussed at the legislative session. Before the increase Louisiana had the third lowest cigarette tax in the country.
