Traffic just got worse as Friday's commute wore on

BATON ROUGE - The commute hit its usual afternoon snag Friday.

Problems started before 3 p.m. and traffic monitors said it was expected to linger until after 7 p.m.  

First, Traffic in both directions slowed between the New Bridge and Washington Street because earlier incidents on both sides of I-10.  A wreck on I-10 East at Perkins Road caused traffic to build toward La 415. A stalled vehicle caused the trouble for westbound traffic over the river. Its traffic jam started backing up into the city.

Traffic was slowed at the I-10/I-110 Junction shortly after 3 p.m. Friday. 

Both incidents were cleared about an hour later but traffic was already too great to clear.

Surface streets saw extreme slowdowns.  Highland Road, Nicholson, Government, Acadian and College Drive had extensive delays ahead of 4 p.m. 

By 5 p.m., traffic headed to Ascension Parish from Baton Rouge became stopped.  The eastbound traffic jam stretched for 11 miles - from Essen Lane to Bluff Road - due to a wreck on the shoulder of I-10.

At 5:17 Friday, traffic stretched through most of Southeast Baton Rouge. 

Compounding traffic issues Friday were a series of sporting events at LSU after 5 p.m. Earlier this week, LSU issued its own traffic advisory. Officials said 25,000 people were expected for baseball, softball, tennis and gymnastic events on campus. All happen around Tiger Stadium.

I-12 saw some issues near Livingston because of a wreck.
