NEW ORLEANS - A national report on reading and math achievement among fourth- and eighth-graders shows Louisiana public schools have improved since the 1990s, but continue to lag behind national averages. And there has been little significant improvement since last year.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress scores were released Tuesday morning. The report showed slight improvements in reading and math in both grades since last year, although that growth was so small that it was deemed "not significant" in the
report.

The report said fourth-graders showed significant improvements in reading and math since the 1990s; Eighth-graders were
significantly better at math in 2011 than were eighth-graders in 1990, but the eighth-grade reading scores have not significantly improved in the state since 1998.
