Improvements after a soaker
Wacky behavior from our weather yesterday as heavy rains put a damper on the evening commute. The heaviest pocket of rain seemed to be centered on the northeast end of Baton Rouge. National Weather Service Mesonet observations displayed the highest amounts in Millersville and Baker with just under 2" during that thunderstorm. Into the Feliciana Parishes, generally 1.25" to 1.50" of rain fell. Note that most of this rain accumulated in a short time period between 5-630pm. On top of the rain, temperatures simply DID NOT behave as forecast yesterday and last night. The high temperature forecast actually verified, occurring surprisingly after the thunderstorms. A brief surge of humidity helped pump thermometers to 67° while we had forecast 65-70° leading up to Tuesday. Cold air spilled in last night much more aggressively than was anticipated, and lows bottomed out around 40° after a forecast in the middle and upper 40s.
Once again our weather has taken a big shift, now towards cooler and drier. A strong high pressure system is digging southward from the Northern Great Plains into the nation's mid-section. This is helping to shove Tuesday's cold front (and the big winter storm in the Ohio Valley) farther east but is also providing a northerly wind and the push of cooler air. This afternoon should feature clearing behind that front as the high entrenches itself further south. Highs shouldn't have the opportunity to recover beyond the middle 50s thanks to the intruding cooler air mass. As skies are clear at least through the first half of tonight, quite a bit of cooling should be able to occur with lows trying to sink to freezing.
