IBERVILLE - "Killing Fields," a Discovery Channel true-crime reality series that digs into cold cases and current ones in the small community of Iberville Parish, will return on Jan. 3.

The series follows the work of Detectives Rodie Sanchez, Aubrey St. Angelo and the rest of the experienced team of detectives led by Major Ronnie Hebert, under the leadership of Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.

The first season of series highlighted the cold case murder of Eugenie Boisfontaine, an LSU graduate student last seen near the university's lakes in June 1997. Two months later, her body was found near Bayou Manchac in Iberville Parish with evidence that she was hit in the head with a blunt object causing her skull to fracture.

Although the season ended without the case being solved, new leads were discovered.

In this season's trailer, it is not clear if the investigation of Boisfontaine's case will resume on air, however the trailer touches on a case where a body was placed in a barrel.

In October, the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office credited the series with contributing to the arrest of a man in relation to the 1991 murder case of Curtis Smith. Smith's body was placed into a 55-gallon barrel and it was sunk in a body of water in the parish. However, Smith's body or the barrel were never recovered.

Season 2 of the true-crime series is set to air on Jan. 3 on the Discovery Channel at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT.
