LOBDELL - State Police said drivers heading west from Baton Rouge should expect delays and detours into this evening as I-10 West remains closed following a deadly 18-wheeler crash near Lafayette.
The wreck happened Thursday night at the foot of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge in Henderson and killed one person. State Police said one big rig heading east crossed the median and hit another 18-wheeler heading west.
That collision caused a massive fire. Troopers say one of the trucks was carry a special type of drilling mud, which turns into an ice-slick surface when it's heated and then doused with water. State Police said it will take a long time to entirely clean it off the interstate.
State Police are directing traffic off the interstate at La. 415 in West Baton Rouge, and over to U.S. 190 until it meets I-49. Traffic congestion is building to the foot of the Mississsippi River Bridge.
