BAKER - The Humane Society of Louisiana is offering a reward for information after an animal rescuer found a dead puppy tied up to a tree near Highway 19 in Baker.

On September 3, a Baker restaurant owner approached Northside Humane Society founder Lori D’Arensbourg and said that a dog was tied to a tree near Highway 19. D’Arensbourg went to the location near Old Baker Road, past the Dixie Pipeline, and found a 5-6-month-old cur shepherd mix lying on its side and tied to a tree with a thick rope.

D’Arensbourg said the puppy probably died from starvation or dehydration.

"I am deeply appalled and concerned that some individual would tie a puppy up and allow him or her to die a slow death,” D'Arensbourge said. “I also wonder, since the puppy was visible to motorists, why no one called the authorities. I saw that the heavy rope was wrapped around the tree, so there would be no chance of the puppy escaping. This was truly a horrible act of cruelty."

The humane society forwarded a photo of the puppy to the East Baton Rouge Animal Control and Rescue Center. The humane society is now urging local animal control officers to investigate the death.

"We are also deeply concerned that someone went out of their way to tie up this poor dog and allow him or her to suffer an agonizingly slow death.  This was so preventable,” HSL Director Jeff Dorson said.

Dorson said that the owner could have surrendered the puppy to a Baton Rouge animal shelter located just 15 minutes from where the dog was found.

The HSL is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction for individuals responsible for the dog’s death. Anyone with information can contact the humane society at 1-888-6-HUMANE or the East Baton Rouge Animal Control and Rescue center at 1-225-774-7700.
