The federal government has extended a housing program for about 11,000 Louisiana and Texas families displaced by hurricanes Ike and Gustav in 2008.

Recipients now have until May 27 to find long-term housing.

The program was established in November 2008 to help displaced residents with up to 17 months of temporary housing assistance.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Emergency Management Agency provided full rental payments for the first six months.

Beginning last May, families began paying $50 a month toward rent and the payment increased $50 a month until the tenant paid the full rent or left the program.

The incremental rate payments will continue through May.
