House speaker wants hearings on Planned Parenthood video
WASHINGTON - House Speaker John Boehner is calling on congressional committees to investigate whether Planned Parenthood is selling organs from aborted fetuses. The Ohio Republican also says he wants President Barack Obama to denounce the practice.
Boehner released his statement a day after an anti-abortion group circulated a video it secretly made showing a Planned Parenthood official discussing the disposal of body parts from aborted fetuses. Boehner says "when an organization monetizes an unborn child," it is time for action.
Planned Parenthood has said the video was heavily edited. It says the organization helps women who want to donate their fetus' organs for scientific research. It says its activities are legal and they do not profit by donating the organs to science.
"Women and families who make the decision to donate fetal tissue for lifesaving scientific research should be honored, not attacked and demeaned," said spokesperson Eric Ferrero.
Governor Bobby Jindal called for an investigation into Planned Parenthood in Louisiana after the video was posted online Tuesday. He also called on state health officials not to issue the group a license to practice abortions at a new clinic being built in New Orleans.
