WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama and Republicans are exploring whether they can end a budget standoff that has triggered a partial government shutdown and edged Washington to the verge of an economy-shaking federal default.

Obama plans a White House meeting with GOP senators on Friday. Senate Republicans say they want to discuss ideas for ending the shutdown and debt limit standoff.

The president conferred Thursday with House Speaker John Boehner and other GOP House leaders on the same topics. They reported no agreement but say talks will continue. That marked one of the first signs that a resolution is possible.

Boehner proposes extending federal borrowing authority through Nov. 22, conditioned on Obama's agreeing to negotiate over spending cuts and the government shutdown.
