BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana House has agreed to rewrite the state's constitutional protections for weapon owners, striking a provision that gives the Legislature explicit authority to limit concealed handguns.
Supporters say the change would give Louisiana the strongest gun protection in the nation and could guard against Supreme Court rulings that undermine the Second Amendment.
Critics say the revamp could lead to the nullification of most of Louisiana's gun limits, including prohibitions of concealed handguns on college campuses.
The House voted 77-22 for the bill by Republican Sen. Neil Riser. It heads back to the Senate for approval of minor changes. Beside legislative approval, it also would require backing by voters in a statewide election before it could be enacted.
