PHOENIX - While a season-ending ACL tear may have sidelined Tyrann Mathieu, the Honey Badger "don’t care."

Neither do the Arizona Cardinals as they’re likely to present him with a contract that could make the former LSU Tiger the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

Ian Rapport of NFL.com reported Monday that the Cardinals are currently in “deep negotiations” with Mathieu. He was a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection last season.

"From what I am told, a new payday is expected to make him among the highest paid, if not the highest-paid safety in the NFL," Rapoport said. "Don't be surprised, if all goes well, if this is done before everyone breaks for the summer.”

Mathieu went to the Arizona Cardinals as a third-round draft pick in 2013. While he had some issues off the gridiron at LSU, he has managed to become one of the NFL’s top players along with becoming a model athlete away from the field.

The 5’9”, 186 pound Honey Badger was caged by an ACL tear in Cards Week 15 win against the Eagles though, ending his season prematurely. It’s still unknown whether or not he’ll be healthy by the time the 2016 season-opener rolls around.

Mathieu is entering the final year of his existing four-year contract with the Cardinals. He’ll make about $1.5 million this year, but he’ll definitely be looking to up those earnings in the future if the deal pans out. Perhaps joining or surpassing some of the highest played safeties in the league.

"Seattle's Earl Thomas earns $10 million per season, New England's Devin McCourty has the highest guarantee at $22 million and Eric Berry is under the franchise tag at $10.8 million in Kansas City," NFL.com's Kevin Patra reported.
