Hockey ice rink roof collapse due to heavy snow
CANTON - A youth hockey team escaped without injury when part of a snow-laden roof collapsed at a Massachusetts skating rink.
Officials in Canton say everyone is safe after Saturday morning's collapse at the Metropolis Skating Rink.
Police say the rear portion of the roof began to fail as a Norwood youth team was inside but they were able to get out along with parents, coaches and rink workers.
Fire Chief Charlie Doody tells The Patriot Ledger of Quincy the children were in the locker room. A coach on the ice was propelled across it by air pressure from the collapse, which also damaged the front facade.
Doody said about 200 children would have been there later.
State officials say snow has caused roof collapses on more than 150 structures this winter.
