Hit-and-run victim donates organs, saves 6
BATON ROUGE - A woman who died after she was hit by a vehicle while walking down a local highway has helped to save the lives of six others.
Tommie Hadley, 21, known as Chrisy to her family, was taken off life support yesterday. She was a registered organ donor.
Family members say her lungs were donated to someone in Florida, the rest of her organs will be donated to people in Louisiana.
Hadley was hit on LA 42 in Ascension Parish on Monday while she was walking along the highway with her brother. Authorities say the driver fled from the scene without stopping.
Two days later police arrested 34-year-old Kathleen Fitzpatrick for felony hit and run driving. An Iberville Parish Sheriff's deputy spotted Fitzpatrick in the banged up vehicle earlier in the day, pulled her over and alerted troopers.
Hadley's family supported her decision to be an organ donor, and say they are looking forward to possibly meeting the people she helped save.
"This time of year people are opening gifts under the tree, iPads, cell phones, you have people receiving the ultimate gift and Christine gave that to them, she gave them the gift of life," said Sharron Chambless, Hadley's aunt.
The family buried Hadley at the Mount Zion cemetery in , La. on Thursday.
