BATON ROUGE - Police say a driver plowed through first responders early Sunday morning as they were working an accident scene on I-10.

First responders were working an accident on I-10 East at the I-12 split around 1:30 a.m. when a car drove through the scene. According to arrest records, 25-year-old William Smith crashed into the already crashed vehicle. The force of the crash caused the car to strike an Acadian Ambulance medic, a Baton Rouge Police officer and a good samaritan.

Police say Smith then fled the scene, striking three other people, including another medic who was dragged into a grassy area on the side of the interstate.

Smith was later apprehended.

According to Acadian Ambulance spokesperson Justin Cox, a total of six people were transported to local hospitals. Injuries included broken bones, deep tissue wounds, lacerated arteries, internal bleeding and head injuries.

One of the medics sustained serious injuries, but Acadian Ambulance says he is in stable condition.

Arrest records say Smith was "displaying extreme signs of impairment" when he was taken into custody. He refused all sobriety testing and asked to speak to his attorney.

Police obtained a blood sample from Smith that was later sent to Louisiana State Police for analysis.
