Hammond Oks summer youth program

HAMMOND, La. - The City Council has authorized Mayor Mason Foster to enter into a cooperative endeavor agreement with an organization that will provide a summer educational and fitness program.

The Advocate reports the council gave its approval for the Willie B. & Lin B. Community Youth Center to use the city's Michael J. Kenney Recreation Center for the summer program. The program is set for May 28-July 26.

April Simmons, who will conduct the summer program, said she expected about 100 children ages 5-14 to participate.

She said the program which will emphasize academics along with instruction in crafts, proper nutrition and physical activity.

Simmons said the program would be staffed by qualified teachers and that participants would receive breakfast and lunch meals. Cost to participate is $125, Simmons said.
