CLINTON - A state district judge says he wished he could sentence a 21-year-old Hammond man to more than five years in prison for the shooting death of a Clinton man in a July 2009 drug deal.

The Advocate reports District Judge George H. Ware Jr. sentenced Anthony Manzella III on Tuesday.

Manzella was convicted of negligent homicide Feb. 9 in the shooting death of Jeral Wayne Matthews Jr.

Prosecutors tried Manzella on a first-degree murder charge, but the jury returned the lesser verdict.

Ware sentenced Manzella to five years in prison, but suspended one year of the term and placed him on probation for a year, which gave the judge leeway to order restitution.

As conditions of probation, Ware ordered Manzella to pay $5,572 for Matthews' funeral and fined Manzella $2,500.
