BATON ROUGE- A state House committee defeated another bill which would allow concealed carry holders to bring firearms on a Louisiana college campus, rejecting it with an 8-3 vote.
State Rep. Ernest Wooten, I-Belle Chasse, has attempted to get similar bills through the legislature for several years, arguing that the constitutional right to bear arms should not end at a college campus' property line.
Opponents argue that more guns would only cause more confusion for law enforcement. Rep. Dalton Honore, D-Baton Rouge, is a former law enforcement officer and opposed the bill, saying a gun in a person's pocket causes them to treat people differently.
Students who were victims in the Virginia Tech shooting were also at the committee meeting, but the bill was deferred before they could speak.
