BATON ROUGE - One gun store is offering free training to women who have restraining orders against abusive men.

The owners of Precision Firearms and Indoor Range said they reached the decision because they're upset with the recent killing of Geismar resident Monica Johnson.

Authorities said Johnson was killed Sunday night at her home, bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat. Her estranged husband, David Johnson, is charged with first degree murder. Monica Johnson had filed a restraining order against him before her death.

On Tuesday, Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley told women in such situations to arm themselves.

"Go get a concealed weapon permit. Find a safe gun and learn how to use it. Store it safely, and use it. Use it," Wiley said.

The gun store will offer the classes in a few weeks to certify women to apply for a concealed carry permit. The class only has 15 spots available and will run in the evening for three days during the week. Each class will run three hours. More information can be found on the Precision Firearms Facebook page.
