East Baton Rouge Parish school officials found a gun on the grounds of Woodlawn High School during a random search.
The sheriff's office says deputies were conducting the search Friday morning when the weapon was found in a trash can inside the school's gymnasium.
During the subsequent investigation, deputies learned the gun was brought to the school by a 14-year-old freshman. The boy allegedly took the .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol from his parent's home without their knowledge. He told deputies he planned to use it recreationally over the weekend while visiting a relative.
When the student learned of the search, authorities say he stashed the gun in the can. Deputies also found a loaded magazine in the trash can separate from the weapon.
The sheriff's office tells The Advocate that the boy was booked with illegal carrying of a firearm by a student onto school grounds. His name was not released.
