An estimated 9,000 people could be eligible for grants from a $100 million fund to help struggling oil rig workers that are idle because of the federal moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf.
Applications will be accepted from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30 from rig workers who are seeking grants. It's being head by the Gulf Coast Restoration & Protection Foundation, an affiliate of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation.
The applications will be graded against each other to determine need, before any dollars are doled out. Grant checks will range from $3,000 to $30,000 - depending on financial hardship, and will be mailed in October.
BP donated the money for a Rig Worker Assistance Fund and chose BRAF to administer it.
