A former employee at the Caddo Juvenile Detention Center is accused of battering an inmate.

Sheriff Steve Prator said Tuesday that 56-year-old Dale Smith of Shreveport was issued a summons for simple battery following an investigation by sheriff's Detective Jackie Winston and a review by the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office.

Smith is accused of knocking a 17-year-old inmate to the ground and choking him following a verbal altercation between the two. The alleged incident occurred in May.
