NEW ORLEANS- Conservation groups say they will sue the National Marine Fisheries Services and officials in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama unless they do more to protect endangered sea turtles.

The groups said Tuesday that they want the Fisheries Service to stop all all shrimp trawling - at least during more studies.

They say record numbers of sea turtles are being drowned in shrimp nets. Chris Pincetich of Turtle Island Restoration Network says the groups don't plan to sue Florida and Texas because shrimping regulations in those states go beyond federal rules.

The Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife and the Sea Turtle Conservancy joined Turtle Island. The notice sent Tuesday gives potential defendants 60 days to act before a suit is filed under the Endangered Species Act.
