Group wants truck stop tiger removed

BATON ROUGE – An animal rights group has asked state officials to revoke a truck stop’s permit to have a live tiger named Tony on display.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund filed a petition with the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, claiming the tiger’s conditions and habitat at the truck stop are not adequate to keep it healthy.  They claim travelers taunt the animal, and that his enclosure doesn’t have features like a pool of water or vegetation to engage in typical tiger activities.

LDWF officials said the tiger's owner, Mike Sandlin, has not filed a petition for a new permit yet, and has until Dec. 31 to do so. Once he does they will review the tiger's living conditions.

News 2’s Stephanie Ryan is investigating the group’s claims, and will have more on this tonight on News 2 at 6.
