Gray triggerfish season closes; red grouper limits
BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says recreational fishing for gray triggerfish will close in Louisiana waters at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and will remain closed until Jan. 1. The state is matching a closure in federal waters.
NOAA Fisheries biologists said Wednesday the annual recreational catch target of 217,000 pounds will soon be met, and the closure is needed to stay within that limit.
NOAA Fisheries said Monday that it will reduce the recreational bag limit for red grouper in federal waters from four to three fish, starting Monday. It will close the 2014 red grouper recreational harvest at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 16.
The agency says the changes are to compensate for last year's catch, which went 492,000 pounds over the annual limit of 1.9 million pounds.
