Grant to expand BRAVE program comes through
BATON ROUGE - Mayor-President Kip Holden announced today that a $1 million federal grant was awarded recently to the Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination Program, or BRAVE.
Holden said the grant would help the crime-fighting program expand from the 70805 ZIP code into the 70802 area of the city, and be part of a three-year violence elimination program.
The BRAVE project has been focused in high-violence portions of Baton Rouge and targeted street gangs in those areas. Metro Council member Tara Wicker recently voiced concerns that rather than eliminating crime, the crackdown was pushing criminals into different ZIP codes.
City-parish and law enforcement leaders scheduled a press conference discussing details of the grant for Monday afternoon.
