WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Republicans' newest point man on the Benghazi attack, congressman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, is a seasoned prosecutor determined to apply his courtroom skills to an election-year examination of the Obama administration.

The two-term congressman will lead a special select committee investigating the events surrounding the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died in the attack.

Multiple independent and bipartisan investigations have faulted the State Department for inadequate security. Yet many conservatives consider those inquiries insufficient.

Republicans are expected to force a vote Thursday to establish the select committee despite Democratic objections that it's unnecessary.

The 49-year-old Gowdy is a hard-charging conservative who has repeatedly challenged the Obama administration.
