BATON ROUGE- A community is planning a theoretical funeral, since the state-run school system is closing a nearly century old institution.

Closing Istrouma High School at the end of the school year will also cost dozens of teachers and staff their jobs.

Tuesday, the Recovery School District announced Istrouma and Glen Oaks Middle School will shutdown in May.  Five other schools it directly runs will be shuffled to charter groups from out-of-state.

The RSD took control of the schools after both repeatedly failed when it was run by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.  But, in new scores released recently, Istrouma scored an "F" and and Glen Oaks received a "D."

The district gave students letters to their parents notifying them of the shutdown Tuesday afternoon.  The more than 25 Istrouma teachers were told about the shutdown at a 10:30 a.m. meeting, according to booster member Anissia Green.

"We've been promised a number of things especially about how [the district] is going to improve the academics at the school and transform the school and that has not happened," Green said.

Students attending Istrouma can transfer to Capitol High School, another RSD school that will be given to a charter, or Broadmoor High School and Belaire High School, both in the East Baton Rouge School District.

Glen Oaks Middle students can enroll at Crestworth Middle. Crestworth will also be the school for many Prescott Middle as that school will be transferred into an elementary school.

"They don't understand what this will do to the community," a man who lives near Istrouma said after learning the news Tuesday.

Leaders argue something has to be done to get students to succeed.
