GONZALES - A joint law enforcement operation led to the arrest of a Gonzales man on 31 counts of possessing child porn, according to the Office of Attorney General "Buddy" Caldwell.

55-year-old Everett Carter was taken into custody without incident last Thursday and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail at the end of an investigation that involved the FBI, the Attorney General's Cyber Crime Unit, the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office and Homeland Security Investigations.

Carter is charged with violating a state law that forbids the production, distribution, possession or possession with intent to distribute pornography involving juveniles. If convicted as charged, he faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the 31 child porn charges.

"My office is continually upgrading to the latest technology and resources needed to protect our children from online predators. We will continue to work together with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to track down and capture these criminals," said Attorney General Caldwell in a release on Monday.

The Ag's Cyber Crime Unit under Caldwell has investigated thousands of computer crimes which have victimized children from infants up to 17 years of age. The Attorney General's Office urges the public to report suspected cases of internet crime to continue the crackdown by calling them at 1-800-256-4506.
