Gone to the birds
SPRING LAKE, NEW JERSEY- An emergency siren is silent because birds built a nest inside and by law, can't be removed.
A pair of ospreys even have a pair of chicks that have hatched.
The siren was turned off in the resort town of Spring Lake for the spring and summer because of the birds.
Now, firefighters and paramedics are relying on cell phones and pagers to alert them to emergencies.
Authorities say its working so far and admit they may need to create an alternate place nearby for the birds next year, since they tend to return to the same spot.
