Godfrey leads Southern past Alcorn, 62-54
BATON ROUGE - Calvin Godfrey scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Southern to a 62-54 win over Alcorn State on Saturday.
Malcolm Miller added 11 points and YonDarius Johnson 10 for the Jaguars (12-10, 8-1 Southwest Athletic Conference), who limited Alcorn State to 30.4 percent shooting.
Octavious Brown led the Braves (8-13, 5-4) with 18 points and LeAntwan Luckett came off the bench to add 13, though he hit just 3 of 16 shots.
Southern led 28-20 at halftime and opened the second half with quick 3's from Miller and Johnson. Alcorn State quickly cut the deficit down to 5 but a 14-5 run pushed the Jaguars back on top 50-35.
The Braves had a 7-0 run to cut it to 55-48 with 2:05 to play and began sending Southern to the line. However, the Jags were just 7 of 12, although Alcorn couldn't capitalize.
