BATON ROUGE - Even though this is purple and gold, blue and gold, and green and gold country, it's time to drag the red out of the back of your closet. Friday is "Go Red for Women" Day.

"Every minute in this country, a woman dies of heart-related disease," Go Red for Women volunteer Sand Holub told News 2's Kylie Dixon. "80% of those can be avoided by eating well, exercising, not smoking and knowing your numbers. It's all about education."

"We're trying to get out the message that we should all be walking a mile," explains Dr. Robert St. Amant from Baton Rouge General. "That does so many things for our health like reducing blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, it gives a sense of wellness, and it can be fund with neighbors, family and what not."

It's also important to know your risk factors.

"Risk factors for both heart attack and stroke include a family history...lifestyles...watching your blood numbers...and go and get a heart check-up," Dr. St Amant says.

The focus is on women's heart health because a lot of time, women put themselves last.

"We'd rather take the dog to the vet than go to the doctors ourselves," Holub joked.
