MONROE - Vermillion Catholic's Kaylen Collins hit a game-winning lay-up with six seconds left as the No. 2 Lady Eagles upset top-ranked West St. John in the Louisiana Girls' 1A State Championship Game Thursday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe.

Prior to Collins' game-winning shot, Vermillion Catholic had gone scoreless from the field for 7:25 but had hit 15 consecutive points from the free-throw line in that time span.

Vermillion Catholic (28-6) overcame 25 turnovers and was 0-for-7 from beyond the arc but held the Lady Rams (29-2) without a field goal over the final 1:56.

The Lady Eagles were led by Katie Frith's 25 points while Ashailee Brailey scored 10.

West St. John was led by Jalyn Gordon's 30 points, 18 of which came off 3-point shots. Jajuan Nicholas added 10 points.
