The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality will host a public hearing on March 9 about a
proposal to store natural gas in the Cote Blanche salt dome in St. Mary Parish.
Henry Gas Storage is moving through the permit process necessary to construct four caverns in the dome.
Each cavern could hold up to 11.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
The company has maintained that the project is safe and poses no environmental or other hazards to the area.
However, the North American Salt Co., which operates a salt mine in the same dome, has expressed major opposition to the plans, saying placing natural gas so close to its miners could put them at risk for a catastrophic event.
