Gas for Guns back for third year
BATON ROUGE - The 3rd annual Gas for Guns, a drive to get unsecured guns off the streets, is scheduled for Saturday in East Baton Rouge Parish.
The program is a chance for people to turn in their unwanted guns with no questions asked. The goal is to keep guns off the streets and reduce the number of murders in the community.
The program is part of the B.R.A.V.E crime fighting initiave sponsored by Circle K. People can get anywhere from $50 to $300 in gas coupons depending on the type of gun.
Since the program started over 300 unsecured guns have been collected. Some guns turned in have been stolen guns, and were returned to their rightful owners.
"More than likely it's going to reduce just negligence compared to crime, but if it does affect one crime then we're successful," said District Attorney Hillar Moore.
The exchange program will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at The Living Faith Christian Center on Winbourne Avenue.
