Funeral for Jefferson Parish deputy to be held Monday

GRETNA – Funeral services for a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy that was shot and killed Wednesday, June 22 in the line of duty will be held Monday afternoon.

 Deputy David Michel, Jr., 51, was shot to death near a Dunkin' Donuts on Manhattan Boulevard in Harvey.

Witnesses told investigators the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband during a struggle with Michel and was shot several times. He later died at the University Medical Center where the suspect that was taken into custody was being treated for minor injuries.

Michel was a deputy officer of the Street Crimes Unit.

Michel's viewing will open to the public on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Believer's Life Family Church in Gretna on Lapalco Boulevard. A memorial service begins at 1 p.m.

Following the service, a motorcade will lay Michel to rest at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Westwego.

The procession will pass the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department headquarters as well as the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau for a military salute.
