Freiberg's win to be recognized; must resign school board to take council seat
BATON ROUGE – School Board President Barbara Freiberg will resign from her position as she readies to take-on a new role in city government.
Freiberg, a Republican, beat Ree Carey in Saturday's runoff election for Metro Council. Freiberg will represent District 12 on the city-parish governing body. Freiberg replaces John Delgado on the council who failed in his run for mayor.
Freiberg was elected with 67% of the vote.
Council District 12 includes the Kenilworth, Magnolia Woods, Pollard, Highland Creek, Southdowns and Valley Park neighborhoods.
On the school board, Freiberg represented District 7 which includes River Bend, Southdowns, and the LSU area.
Someone will be appointed to fill the opening on the school board until an election later. The special election will only decide who will fill the seat until the term ends in December 2018.
Freiberg's win will be recognized Thursday by the school board.
