Free welding training offered in capital area
PORT ALLEN - A growing need for skilled trade workers has one company paying for the education of more than 100 students in Louisiana.
Praxair is offering a free program to local students that will provide the tools and education students need to get certified in welding. It's an $8,000 value, open to anyone interested in learning the skill.
The Baton Rouge Community College estimates there will be 20,000 job openings in welding between now and 2016.
Praxair hosted the first of many planned informational events in Port Allen Tuesday in hopes of attracting students. They say it's an opportunity that will benefit everyone involved.
"It was very important to us that this program include tuition, books, materials," said Tamara Brown, with Praxair. "For the people in the community who are underpaid or under employed this is a viable opportunity to support their family."
Praxair will host another information event Thursday at the New Roads Civic Center.
