Fred Smith reports to federal prison in Ark.
PORT ALLEN - Former Port Allen Police Chief Fred Smith is now behind bars for his conviction on federal racketeering charges.
Smith reported to a federal prison in eastern Arkansas this afternoon around 2 p.m., according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
He was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after his conviction this past October. He was found guilty of racketeering, mail fraud, wire fraud and use of a telephone in aid of racketeering.
The conviction was part of an FBI undercover investigation into public corruption, and led to several other arrests and convictions of public officials around the Baton Rouge area.
